The transfer gap

An automatic standby generator starts within seconds of an outage, but it's not instantaneous, there's a short gap, commonly in the range of 10 to 30 seconds, between the power going out and the generator actually picking up the load. For most equipment this gap is a non-issue. For life-critical equipment, that gap is exactly why battery backup for the specific device, in addition to a home generator, is the standard recommendation, not a replacement for it.

Many electric utilities offer a medical baseline or priority-reconnection program for customers who depend on electrically powered medical equipment, which can affect how outages are prioritized and communicated. Contact your utility directly to ask about registering, this is separate from anything a generator installer can set up for you.

What to bring to an installer conversation

  • The specific equipment's power draw and whether it requires an uninterrupted power supply (no gap at all) versus a short-gap-tolerant supply.
