About LumoWatt
LumoWattis a brand-agnostic directory for standby generator installation. Unlike a manufacturer's dealer locator, we don't favor any single brand, and unlike generic lead-gen platforms, we don't resell your contact information to five contractors at once.
Why it exists
LumoWatt is built and run by Zach McKee. The starting problem was straightforward: homeowners researching backup power end up choosing between a single manufacturer's dealer locator (which only shows that brand's certified dealers) or a lead-gen form that hands their contact information to a pile of contractors at once. Neither option is actually useful for comparison-shopping a $5,000 to $15,000 purchase.
LumoWatt exists to be the third option: a directory that covers every major brand, verifies each installer's license independently, and lets homeowners choose which businesses to contact rather than broadcasting their information widely.
How license verification works
Before a listing goes live, we look up the installer's electrical contractor license on their state licensing board's public database and confirm it is active. We record the license number and the date we checked. Listings pending that check are marked “Pending verification” on the site.
A verified license means the business held an active state electrical license as of the date shown. It is not a quality rating and does not reflect customer reviews, pricing, or workmanship. We re-check annually. If you spot an error, use the corrections form.
Payment cannot buy, expedite, or substitute for a license check. Every listing, free or paid, goes through the same process. See our listing standards for the full methodology.
Editorial independence
Our comparison and guide content is written and fact-checked by our editorial team, reviewed for technical accuracy, and never influenced by which installers or brands pay for featured placement. Featured badges are visual distinctions on a listing's own card; they are never a change to how results are ordered or presented as editorial recommendations. See our editorial policy for specifics.
Limitations we're honest about
Coverage is not uniform. We have more installers in high-density states (Texas, Florida, California) than in rural areas. Not every listed business has claimed their profile, so some listings show only basic information. And a verified license is a floor, not a ceiling: it confirms a business is legally licensed, not that it is the best installer in your area.
We publish our data openly via our data reports and welcome corrections at any time.
