The basic distinction
Air-cooled generators use a fan to cool the engine and are the standard choice for most residential systems up to roughly 26 kW, they're less expensive and adequate for typical home backup needs. Liquid-cooled generators use a radiator-based system similar to a car engine, which allows for larger capacity, generally quieter operation, and longer duty cycles, at a higher price point.
Where the line is
Most whole-home residential installations use an air-cooled unit. Liquid-cooled units become more common once you're above roughly 27 kW, or for larger homes and light-commercial applications where the generator needs to run for extended periods without the shorter duty-cycle limits that air-cooled units typically have.
What this means for a typical homeowner
If your home falls in the essential-circuits or most-of-the-home sizing tier, you're very likely looking at an air-cooled unit, and that's a normal, well-proven choice, not a compromise. Liquid-cooled only becomes relevant if your load calculation lands you in whole-home territory on a larger property. Your installer's load calculation, not a general preference for one cooling type, should drive this decision.
